UC Headsets vs. MS Headsets: What's the Difference?

UC Headsets vs. MS Headsets: What's the Difference?

Here at liGo, we have an enormous range of wireless and corded headsets to choose from. Many of our most popular models come in two main variants: UC and MS. But if you're not well-versed in the world of headsets, you may not know what these initials mean. Not to worry, though- the liGo team are here to help clear things up. Read on, and we'll explain what the difference is between UC and MS headsets, so that you can make the right decision with your next purchase.

What Are UC Headsets?

First of all, let's explain why there are two types of headsets. For the vast majority of users, it won't matter which type of headset you choose. It all depends on whether or not you plan on using your headset with a softphone platform. This is a computer program that lets you make calls over the internet, often used by businesses, but it also encompasses things like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.

UC stands for “Universal Communication”. In essence, this means the headset is optimized for use with softphones. They offer plug-and-play setup, so you can start using them straight out of the box. Many models also include advanced features, such as remote calling or the ability to connect to multiple devices at once. If flexibility is something that you need, then a UC headset is therefore a solid choice.

What Are MS Headsets?

MS headsets, on the other hand, are optimized for use with Microsoft Skype for Business, formerly called Microsoft Lync. Hang on- didn’t we just say that UC would work with everything? Strictly speaking, this is true. The audio from your device will play through the headset, and the microphone will pick up the sound of your voice. However, Skype for Business offers more advanced features than a standard softphone platform. This means that any in-line features on a UC headset, such as volume control, won't work properly. MS headsets, on the other hand, are specially programmed to work with Skype for Business straight out of the box.

So- Which Headset Should I Buy?

Feature-wise, there is no difference between UC and MS headsets, and they are generally the same price, too. Ultimately, which headset you choose will come down to just how you plan on using it. If you know that you won't be using your new headset with Skype for Business, then a UC model is a solid choice. On the other hand, if you already use Skype for Business, then naturally you will want to purchase an MS headset instead. If you are unsure, then it's probably best to opt for an MS model. That way, you'll be covered however you use your new headset.

It’s easy to tell which version is which. Jabra include UC or MS in all the names of all relevant products. Plantronics, on the other hand, add an "M" to the name if it is MS. If the product page doesn't specify which version the headset it, then it will be a UC model.
