Portable DAB radios are big business. More and more people are making the switch to digital, and the format has recently overtaken FM to become the UK's number-one listening choice. As a result, plenty of brands are coming out with their own portable DAB radios. However, not all of these are created equal. Many companies cut corners with their portable DAB radios, which means their sound quality simply isn't up to standard. On the other hand, there are some models that offer excellent value for money. To help you sort the wheat from the chaff, we've put together the following list of our top 3 portable DAB radios for 2020.
The VQ Monty is more than just the top portable DAB radio. It also takes the number one spot on our main Top 10 list- it really is that good! That's because the Monty provides incredible sound quality for its price point. With VQ's unique Analogue Sound Processing technology, it offers a warm, rich listening experience. It's also an extremely stylish model, too, available in your choice of oak or walnut casing. This adds some extra acoustic shine to the sound performance, while also making the Monty a bit more robust, too.
Powered by an optional battery pack, the Monty can provide up to 25 hours of portable listening. As well as DAB and FM modes, it also comes with built-in Bluetooth connectivity. That means you can use the Monty as a portable speaker if you want to take control of the soundtrack yourself.
Next up on our list is another entry from VQ. The VQ Retro Mini is one of the most popular models on the market today, mainly because of its highly affordable price. While not quite as robust as the Monty, it still offers great sound quality. What's more, it also includes Bluetooth functionality. That makes it a great choice for a Bluetooth speaker, even if radio isn't your thing. Its small size makes it equally suited to your bedside cabinet or the bathroom, so it's an extremely versatile DAB radio.
One great feature of the VQ Retro Mini is the enormous range of presets available- up to 60. It's also an incredibly eye-catching accessory, too, as attractive to the eye as it is to the ears. Available in a range of different colours, the Retro Mini is certainly one of the most stylish DAB radios around- and one that will turn heads wherever you take it.
Lastly, we have the Panasonic RF-D10. Like the VQ Retro Mini, the RF-D10 is powered by 4 AA batteries. That means it's readily portable straight out of the box, without the need for an additional battery pack. It also has a particularly reliable tuner, so it's great for areas with patchy radio signal. It also includes 10 one-touch preset buttons for added ease of use. Rather than going through menus, you can tune into your favourite stations right away.
The main reason why the RF-D10 comes in at number three on our list is the lack of Bluetooth connectivity. This means you will only be able to use it to tune in to the radio, rather than listening to your own music. This won't be a problem for some users, but it does make it less versatile than the VQ radios we discussed above.
All three of the portable DAB radios on our list are great choices. The Panasonic RF-D10 is perhaps the easiest to transport, but the lack of Bluetooth lets it down somewhat. The VQ Retro Mini is undoubtedly a great pick, especially since it comes at such an affordable price with solid sound quality and an eye-catching design. However, our top choice remains the VQ Monty. With the best sound quality we've heard from a portable DAB radio, and a fantastic Scandi-style design, it's ideal for tuning in just about anywhere.
