If you're looking for a gift for kids, then you really can't go wrong with a set of walkie talkies. Not only are they great fun to take along on all their adventures, but they can also help to keep children safe by ensuring you can always keep in contact with them. But as a parent, you will obviously want to be sure that you are whatever you give your children is high-quality. For that reason, we've put together the following list of our top three picks for kids' walkie talkies.
For sheer value, the Motorola TLKR T40 is by far one of the best kids' walkie talkies on the market. With up to 4 km range in optimum conditions, it's a solid choice for family trips, or for playing around the house and garden. Motorola two-way radios tend to be fairly robust, so there's less chance of these handsets breaking if the kids get a little rough with them.
As license-free radios, there are no call charges to pay, and the handsets are ready to go as soon as you insert batteries. With 8 different channels to choose from, they are also suitable for use in busy areas, too. They also come with detachable belt clips that ensure children don't accidentally leave them behind. And if red isn't your kids' favourite colour, then the TLKR T40 also comes in another variant- the T41- in either orange or blue.
Next up is the Motorola TALKABOUT T42. Like the T40, it boasts range of up to 4km, which makes it ideal for use at home, camping, or out at the beach. However, there are a few key differences between this model and the first entry on our list. Most notably, the design is a lot more child-friendly, with a simple button layout and a wider range of colours available. As well as standard red and blue, the T42 also comes in a triple pack with three different colours included.
But there are more than just cosmetic differences between the two. The Motorola T42 also includes an easy pairing button, located on the side of the handset. Hold this down on all your radios simultaneously, and they will automatically set themselves to the same frequency. Naturally, this makes them a lot easier for kids to use, since they won't have to waste any time pairing up the radios. It's also good news for parents, since you can be sure you'll always be on the same frequency if you want to check up on them with your own radio.
In many respects, the Motorola T62 is the same as the T42. As part of the TALKABOUT range, its design is almost identical, although the colouring is flipped. It also features an easy pairing button, making it another very user-friendly handset.
The main difference is that the T62 offers double the range of its smaller siblings- up to 8 km. While it's unlikely that the signal will stretch quite that far in practise, it will still provide solid sound quality over a relatively long distance. Coupled with the more mature design, the Motorola T62 is therefore more suited to older children. If you want to give them a bit more freedom while still making sure they can keep in contact, then this is the handset for you. There isn't a huge jump in price between the T42 and the T62, so if you feel that extra range will come in handy, it makes sense to opt for the TALKABOUT T62.
Motorola are by far the best brand for kids' walkie talkies, since they offer better build quality and more reliable range. All three options on our list offer something slightly different. If you're just looking for a reliable set of kids two-way radios at an affordable price, then the Motorola T40 is a solid choice. If you've got a bit more to spend, then it makes sense to consider the T42, with its more child-friendly design and easy pairing button. Finally, for those who need some extra range, then the T62 provides double that of the previous two options, extending to up to 8 km in ideal conditions.
