We put the KX-TGJ320 through its paces, assessing build quality, sound, features, and more. Design & build
Panasonic cordless phones come in all shapes and sizes, but are generally well-built pieces of tech. The KX-TGJ320 certainly lives up to that reputation. It feels nice and solid in the hand with a decent amount of weight to it, although not to the point that it's uncomfortable to use for a long time. Design-wise, it's a lot sleeker than the average cordless handset. While it may not be up there with the most premium handsets, it is still a very smart piece of tech.
The KX-TGJ320 comes with a full-colour screen, with an intuitive menu system that makes the phone very easy to use. The buttons are also backlit, and have a nice matte effect to them rather than feeling like cheap plastic. All the controls are intuitively laid out, and the menus are simple to find your way around.
Set-up
As with most cordless phones, getting the Panasonic KX-TGJ320 up and running is as simple as plugging in the base station to the mains and your telephone line. That's it- you're ready to start making and receiving calls. There's an abridged version of the product manual included in the box, which gives you all the info you need to get it set up. If you want more information, then there is a more in-depth version of the manual available electronically.
If you find that you need some extra range, then you'll be pleased to hear that the KX-TGJ320 is repeater-compatible. For another repeater, the process has a few more steps, but it's not too complicated- we've even made a video showing you exactly how to do it.
Sound quality
Sound quality is probably the most important thing to look for in a cordless phone. After all, what use is a phone if it's too faint or crackly to hear the person on the other end of the line? That's why we personally test out each handset in-house. Our experts made test calls to both landlines and mobiles to ensure the sound quality is up to standard.
We're happy to report that the Panasonic KX-TGJ320 offers great sound quality. It's good on speakerphone, too, with no noticeable dip in quality. We put it above most other Panasonic phones, and it's almost on a par with Gigaset's excellent audio quality. Unusually, the KX-TGJ320 also has an equaliser option, so you can tweak the sound profile to your liking. This will probably be of most use to older users who struggle to hear higher frequencies.
The only downside to mention here is that there's no option to change the sound quality on the answer machine. That does mean you'll always get the full 40-minute recording time as stated on the box. In practise, though, it can be a little bit faint. That being said, it's not too bad- only a smidgen below average on this level. The ringer is also slightly quieter than other home phones, which may be an issue for some users. For most, though, it should be plenty loud enough.
Range
In terms of range, the KX-TGJ320 is certainly a reliable DECT phone. We always say this in our reviews, but it's worth going over again. With a DECT phone, you can get up to 50m range indoors and up to 300m outdoors. In practise, this maximum figure can be affected by things like thick walls or electrical interference. If you find that you need a bit of extra range, then you'll be pleased to hear that the KX-TGJ320 is repeater compatible. When set up, this will give you up to double the range on your phones. So, if you live in a larger property and are investing in multiple handsets, you'll be able to get the most out of your setup.
Additional features
The KX-TGJ320 comes with a built-in answer machine. This can be accessed from both the base and handsets, and it has a 40-minute capacity. You can record your own personalised greeting, which is very simple to do- the phone itself will talk you through this process. And if you pick up the handset while a message is being recorded- it puts the person on the other end straight through to you!
The KX-TGJ320 also has some nuisance call blocking features. There's an anonymous call block, which stops incoming calls from numbers without a Caller ID. You also have the ability to block up to 100 individual numbers to stop repeat offenders from contacting you.
The phonebook has room for 250 entries, which should be more than large enough for most users. Finally, the phone stores the last 50 incoming and outgoing numbers in a a recent calls list- bigger than the one you'd find on your average cordless phone.
