Panasonic KX-TGH720 Cordless Phone Review

Panasonic KX-TGH720 Cordless Phone Review

The Panasonic KX-TGH720EB is the latest cordless phone from the highly-regarded electronics brand. It's a mid-range model, available with up to six handsets. At liGo, we've always rated Panasonic phones highly. But how does this new model compare against its older siblings? We put it to the test in another of our in-depth reviews- read on to find out how we got on.

Design & build

The KX-TGH720 is undoubtedly one of the nicest-looking Panasonic phones currently on the market. It boasts a sleek, modern design, and is slightly slimmer than the average cordless phone. The all-black design pictured here lends this handset a little more class than its silver counterpart. The full-colour screen not only looks a lot nicer than a monochrome screen, but it also makes navigating menus that much easier.

It's not just the handset that looks great, either. Panasonic have also excelled themselves when designing the base unit and charging cradles, too. In fact, the base unit has been trimmed down slightly. This gives it a smaller footprint so it takes up less space in your home.

As for build quality, the KX-TGH720 also rates highly. It may only be plastic, but it has a solid amount of weight to it and sits nicely in the hand. Most importantly, it's comfortable to use for long periods of time- so if you like to spend a lot of time chatting on the phone, then this handset is a great pick!

Set-up

As with most cordless phones, setting up the KX-TGH720 is very straightforward. Just pop in the batteries, plug in the base, and you're ready to start making and receiving calls. If you purchase a quad set or above, then you'll need to register some of the handsets to the base. However, this is a fairly straightforward process, and we include our own instructions in an email to customers to keep things nice and simple. Additional features like nuisance call blocking will require a little more setup.

Sound quality

The sound quality on the KX-TGH720 is excellent, going above and beyond Panasonic's already high standards. During testing, we used the TGH720 to call both landlines and mobiles, and found it to be equally clear on both. It's especially impressive given the price- it provides the kind of sound we would expect from a more expensive model.

The TGH-720 also includes a full duplex loudspeaker. This cuts out the irritating echo that you sometimes get while on speakerphone, so calls are equally clear both on and off loudspeaker. It also includes a built-in volume booster, making it 70% louder than other Panasonic phones. That makes it a great choice for the hard of hearing. Lastly, there are quick volume control buttons on the side of each handset, so you can turn it up or down during a call.

Range

As with virtually all cordless phones, the KX-TGH720 boasts up to 50m range indoors, and up to 300m outdoors. In most cases, this is plenty. But those who live in larger properties or who have thick walls may find that they need a little extra range. Luckily, the TGH720 is compatible with most DECT repeaters. With one of these connected, you'll be able to get up to double the range from your cordless phones. This gives the TGH720 the edge over BT phones, which aren't repeater-compatible.

Additional features

One major benefit of the KX-TGH720 is its nuisance call blocking features. There’s an automated call block mode, which means when someone calls you up, they’ll be told to input a number before your phone actually rings. Since the vast majority of nuisance calls are automated, this can massively reduce the number you receive. For those that do get through, there’s a blacklist to block up to 1000 individual numbers. Using the one-touch call block button, you can instantly add numbers to the blacklist.

For times when you don’t want to be annoyed by anyone, there’s also a Do Not Disturb mode. With this switched on, only preselected VIP numbers can get through at certain times of the day or night. That way, if there’s an emergency, you can still be contacted- and otherwise, you can enjoy some peace and quiet.

Last but not least, the KX-TGH720 comes with a built-in answer machine, which you can access from both the base and the handset. It provides up to 40 minutes of recording time, which is on the larger side of things as far as answer machines go. The sound quality of messages is good, too, unlike some other models where these messages can at times be hard to understand.

Panasonic KX-TGH720EB: The Verdict

The KX-TGH720EB is another great home phone from Panasonic. Not only is it stylishly designed, but it also provides great sound quality on calls, as well as a host of handy features. Best of all, this cordless phone is outstanding value for money, so if you're looking for a new phone, it's well worth considering.
