Each month we will highlight one cordless phone as worthy of some spotlight; models can be old or new as long as they meet our approval and that of our customers. Our choice for this month is - Siemens Gigaset S795 - a premium mid-range home cordless phone and answering machine, which exudes style, build quality, and reliable performance.
After careful consideration and some lengthy converstations dissecting the various pros and cons of the numerous DECT phones we've reviewed over the past few weeks, the S795 was the clear choice for our first award for Cordless Phone of the Month. Following the decision, we tried to identify the main reasons that it stood out above all others, and this is what we to came up with:
Unlike most manufacturers of cordless phones, Gigaset manufacture their products at their own factory (based in Borcholt, Germany) and it makes a difference. They also adhere to the principle that form follows function - that the design of a product and its ability to do what it's made to do well are inextricably linked. And the Gigaset S795 looks and feels like a premium phone should: the handset has a nice weight, is comfortable to hold, and the dimensions are just right; whilst the keypad and menus are all well laid out.
From the galvanised metal caps on the buttons to the high-quality TFT colour display, the build quality of the S795 is discernible. As with all Gigaset phones, it carries a 2-year warranty (compared to the standard 1-year offered by all other phone manufacturers) but has been built to last so if well looked after will offer many years loyal service.
Gigaset cordless phones are synonymous with great audio quality, and are consistently reated highly for sound performance by those who've used it, as well as the likes of Which?. Utilising their own sound protocol for landline HSP, the clarity of calls is exceptional and the S795 ably demonstrates this. With a reliable DECT signal ensuring interference-free performance over a dependable range (indoors & outdoors), the sound quality on the S795 is exceptional. We've tested more expensive phones, and the sound quality is only ever on a par with the S795 (if not inferior).
Packed with practical features to take advantage of – the Gigaset S795 is as ideal for small offices as it is for busy homes. The phonebook can store an impressive 500 contacts (with space for 3 numbers per entry), which can be synchronised with contacts on your PC via Gigaset QuickSync. There is also an integrated answering machine (which can record up to 45 minutes); the facility to expand the system to six handsets; call management features (including transfer, hold, intercom, conference); a hands-free loudspeaker, and more. It may come with higher than average price tag but it lives up to the maxim that you get what you pay for.
This is just as important if not more so than what we think of a product. Only phones with the endorsement of those who have actually spent their own money on it, and used it on a regular basis will be considered for the award. The Gigaset S795 has racked up over 80 customer reviews, and is recommended by 89% of them. Here is a breakdown of how are customers rate the phone, and a few comments:
If you're looking for a top-quality home phone at a reasonable price, then the Gigaset S795 is an excellent choice. Delivering features and sound quality befitting far more expensive models on the market, this is a landline phone that is unlikely to disappoint.
